What's going on in 1st grade..... *Friday we will send home the September monthly choice board for homework. Students will be able to make choices of homework skills throughout the month as well as their nightly reading. They will return the folder at the end of the month. More specific instructions will be in the folder. *We have started a share time during class meetings this week. Students may bring in an item to share or just tell us something. They will have the opportunity to share once a week if they want. This helps us to work on our speaking and listening skills. *Reading- We have been working on asking questions in our class text as well as individual text that we are working on in reading. We are also beginning a review of character and setting in different books. Phonics- We have been reviewing short vowel sounds and practicing words. We are introducing diagraph sounds this week- ch, sh, -ck, I really enjoyed seeing everyone at Open House last week! Thank you for attending. I am finalizing the class directory and will email it out to you all.
*Just a reminder to send in a note if your child is participating in a FAST class. I will make that note to their dismissal. *Next week is picture day August 23rd. This week in 1st grade.... *Monday- We will be attending the ILC for a lesson and to check out books. Students will be able to get 2 books and keep for two weeks if they like. *Reading- We continue to work on reading workshop and Daily 5 routine. We have been increasing our reading stamina and are working on choosing good fit books. We are also working on asking questions about text before, during, and after reading. In Phonics we are reviewing consonant and vowel sounds and building short vowel CVC words. *Writing- We are beginning to learn about narrative writing. We are talking about small moments that we can write about and sequence events. *Social Studies- We are introducing continents and oceans. We will be using maps, PebbleGo, and other resources to practice skills. *Math- We continue to work on numbers to 120: writing, recognizing, and counting. We are working on our math routines and using math journals and games to practice skills. We are also using number talks to understand number sense. We had a great first week in first grade! We spent a lot of time getting to know each other and learning about the classroom. We had the opportunity to go out and help in the garden by watering and picking vegetables. This week in 1st grade we look forward to learning our procedures for math, reading, and writing. We will be learning our routines and schedules more specifically. We start Guidance this week with Mrs. Grindstaff on Monday.
