What is going on at Tritt......
*Thursday January 31st is Donut Day. Students may bring in $1 to purchase a donut on that day. Order forms also went home if parents would like to order a dozen and pick up in car pool line that day. All proceeds to benefit Rally foundation! *Tritt family dance is coming up! K and 1st grade will have their dance time on Friday February 8th from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm. The theme this year is Superheros!! I know that the students will love this. This is a family event so all family members are welcome. Tickets are available online on the Tritt website through PTA. Tickets will also be available at the door. This is always a fun time for the students to gather after school and have fun dancing:) What is going on in 1st grade..... *We will just be doing a check out for books from the library this week. Please return books and your child may check out new ones. *Reading- We will be working on central message this week in reading. Students will learn how to identify the lesson the author is trying to teach/get across to the reader. We have a lot of great mentor texts to model this comprehension skills with students! Phonics- We have been working on long vowel words that have the silent/magic e. This week we will start working on long vowel words that have vowel teams. Rule: '2 vowels go walking, the first one does the walking and says its name' (ex. ai-, ay) *Writing- We continue to work on opinion writing. Students are learning how to give their opinion and back it up with specific reasons. We have been working on 'My favorite pet' writing. This week we will tie in our study of continents and animals and write about whether a penguin would make a good pet. We have been working on making sure we have an opening sentence in our writing and a closing sentence to wrap it up. Grammar- We continue to work on capitalization and punctuation when writing complete sentences. We are also looking at proper nouns and making sure that we capitalize the names of people and places. *Social Studies- We kicked off our study of continents, oceans, and land forms last week. We will be doing rotations this week with the other 1st grade classes. Our class will rotate to each of the other teachers who will be teaching the students about a specific continent. We will cover the oceans that are near it, land forms we may find there, weather patterns, and animals that we may find. We will be doing rotations Monday and Tuesday this week. *Tritt's talent show is on Thursday January 24th at 6:30 at Pope High School. It is a great chance to come out and see students perform different talents. Hope to see you there:) *Hero essays are due January 25th in the ILC. What's going on in 1st grade... *HW- please feel free to only do 2-3 homework activities with the short week. *Phonics- We are reviewing our silent e words by practicing reading and spelling words in the classroom with different activities. *Reading- We continue to practice comparing and contrasting different texts in the classroom. We have been reading 'Tacky the penguin' books and they have been fun to compare with each other. We have learned how to compare characters, setting, and events/problem and solution. We are reviewing these story elements in different books this week. *Writing- We continue to work on opinion writing. We are writing this week on our favorite week and coming up with reasons that support our opinion. We are also focusing on writing a good opening sentence to let the reader know what we are writing about. *Social Studies- We are wrapping up our study of Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea. We will begin our study of continents, oceans, and landforms. We will be doing rotations next week and visiting each 1st grade teacher who will be teaching about one of our continents. We look forward to learning these geographical skills as well as other interesting facts about these continents. *Math- We are beginning comparing numbers this week. We will review how knowing the tens and ones place of numbers helps us to compare numbers. We are learning vocabulary such as greater than, less than, and equal to as well as symbols that also represent these terms >,<, =. What's happening in 1st grade.......
*Remember to return collection bags by Monday January 14th. *ILC later this week. Please return books if needed. *Reading- We are working on comparing and contrasting characters and adventures in different stories. We are talking about similarities and differences and using different graphic organizers to help us organize our thoughts i.e. Venn diagrams. *Phonics- We are working on the silent e rule. We are looking at CVC words and how when we add e at the end it makes the vowel say its name. We have had fun looking at videos for 'ninja e', 'silent e', 'magic e', and ' bossy e'. *Writing- We have been learning the difference in fact and opinion. This week we will kick off our opinion writing unit by using our collection bags to rate our objects and pick a winner, as well as give a reason for picking this object. *Math- We continue to work on missing addend equations. We have learned that addends are what we add together in an addition equation and the sum is our answer. We have been referring back to our knowledge of part/part/whole in addition. We will also be doing word problems this week with missing addend. *Social Studies- We have begun our study of Lewis and Clark and Sacagawea. We have been using books, BrainPop, and PebbleGo to gain information about these explorers.
